Be Still

Psalm 46:10

“Be still and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations.  I will be exalted in the earth!”

Can you think of a moment recently where life seemed too loud, too chaotic, too stressful, just plain too much?  I asked this questions to our kids in Kid Church one Sunday.  Their reaction had me almost frozen.  Not only did many nod yes, but you could see on their faces that it was something that had a true effect on them.  As adults we could say yes all too often.  It seems like life just goes from one loud chaotic moment to another.

That Sunday morning in Kid Church the kids in front of me could have easily been teens, parents, grandparents, a group of any age.  We live in a world that chaotic sometimes just seems the normal.  But it doesn’t make it any easier to live through it.  When I asked them that question that morning my next question was what the Holy Spirit wanted spoken to them.  Have you ever wished you could make the noise stop?  When the question came I thought I’d have to explain “the noise”, but I was wrong, kids immediately nodded their heads or raised their hands.  I am so thankful for the Holy Spirit and His guiding.  For the next several moments I spoke to the kids about the power of worship.

You see in the middle of the storms God is there with us.  We may not always remember that but He is.  He understands more than anyone wanting everything to cease and be still.  Even Jesus cried out wanting there to be another answer besides the cross.  In Psalm is a verse that I remind myself of on a regular basis. “Be still and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations.  I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10)  In those moments where everything is too loud, when life just seems like too much all we have to do is remember He is still in control, He is not surprised by our situation, He is still God!

That Sunday with the kids I told them, when life seems too loud, take time to hit pause.  Go to your room, close the door, turn on a worship song and just let the song fill your room and your thoughts, ask God for peace.  Take time to be still.  It is in those moments when the Holy Spirit will remind us of God’s unwavering peace.  His love will fill the room and we can be reminded that in anything He will be exalted, we need only to be still.  The chaotic may still be there when the moment is over but you will have the peace of God with you.  The peace of God will surround you in the chaotic, all you have to do is ask.
